My wife’s laptop has finally kicked the bucket, and there is a decent Mythlogic (Clevo) laptop on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with a matte IPS display that is a pretty decent price. Has anyone owned or used a Clevo? I think it’s a ws650.

They’re like really nice laptops. Very durable and high quality. Do you have a link?

From what I’ve read they seem to be well built, and while it only has integrated graphics that should be good enough for Photoshop. The screen is decent too, and probably the best we could find with an actual quad-core i7. It would have been nice if it had 16gb ram, but that’s easy to upgrade if we need to. I’ll probably keep the SSD for myself and throw her hybrid 1tb drive in from her old laptop. This is all assuming it hasn’t been sold.

I have a Clevo that has been branded as an iBuypower, and it has been garbage. Intermittent motherboard issues, a failed hard drive in the first month, failing and noisy fans. . . I would take your money elsewhere. My sister had the same laptop with the same issues as well, and ended up cooking her CPU.

what model did you have? I have heard that ibuypower doesn’t have the greatest QC.

It’s really best you just take the heads off and put them on a Windsor laptop. That makes a performance build easier.

Hot-rodder’s joke . “Clevo” being a nickname for the Cleveland engine - scroll down to the mention of “Clevor”.

They certainly do not. It is the iBuypower i-Series 801. Intel i7-4800MQ, Nvidia GTX765M, 16GB Ram. Other than the graphics card, very similar to what you are looking at.

The joke was easier for me to make due to not having heard of Clevo as a laptop brand before - so my brain went to the engine first.

Never really used them much so I cannot say.

But if your wife is just Photoshopping stuff, a quad core isn’t really necessary.

By god that is expensive, you could purchase a name brand laptop for $500-750 with 8gb and an I3 or I5 processor and can run Photoshop. My first laptop (new in 2010 for $710) had an I3 processor with 4gb and my second one (new in 2012 for $900) I got it with an I7 processor and 8gb and I have not had any noticeable difference in performance With using Photoshop or Lightroom Unless I am doing something very, very intensive.

I have a 2.5 years old Clevo, it’s a really nice machine. The discrete graphics card died, but everyone else who had a 6990M also had their cards dead. I exchanged mine for a nVidia 675M and it has been great so far.

I have nothing to complain about aside from the build quality which is clearly inferior.

1080 p IPS screens and true quad core i7’s are expensive.

In general the quality is meh. Coolers are often too small for the hardware, and i heard about crappy driver support. You can often get a lot for your money, but dont expect it to last more than 1-2 years, and be prepared to clean the cooler for dust.
Personally I buy Asus laptops, they are durable and here in northern Europe their customer service is great.

Well it technically isn’t but she is a software developer and frequently has a ton of programs running as well as billions of tabs in firefox/chrome, a quad core would definitely be nice to have.

I’ve never heard of Clevo.... but like any brand, see what model motherboard, processor and video board are in it. That’s what will determine if it’s going to perform well. You can find out by looking up “i7 4700” that it’s this proceesor: http://ark.intel.com/products/75117…

Not bad, not the latest. It will do more than what the typical home user needs. It sounds a lot like Sager (which I have some experience with and like), but I don’t see a website so I’m assuming they don’t sell direct. Looked up mythlogic’s site and I like what they do, so overall it’s going to be a decent system.

What does your wife do? Is there gaming involved? If yes, get something with a better GPU. If not, this should be fine for most complex tasks.

Having multiple stuff running and many tabs open is more of a RAM thing. 8GB should still suffice.

She doesn’t game, just photoshop and work, so the integrated graphics are fine. This laptop is technically Mythlogic, but like Sager they are all Clevo’s underneath. I’m aware the CPU isn’t the absolute latest, but it should still be good I would think.

The only other thing is that 128GB SSD seems pretty small, but that’s upgradable easy enough. I’d want at least 256GB for a modern working machine.

RAM won’t help you if your CPU is occupied running the software you are developing while you are also doing Photoshop, etc. CPU has a limited number of threads it can work on concurrently and, believe me, it’s really nice to have a bunch of them if you are writing and testing software in the background. Lets you do other things while you wait for results.

Kinja'd!!! Nibby > Axial
04/28/2015 at 18:34

Kinja'd!!!0

I know that, but these days, dual cores are good enough for MOST people.

Quad core machines are pretty much a waste unless people use them for CPU-heavy things like video editing, gaming, number crunching, etc.

Running Photoshop and dozens of tabs open at once is something most computers in the past 5 years can do easily.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Nibby
04/28/2015 at 18:50

Kinja'd!!!0

But that’s not what Sir_Stig said she does. He said she also does software development. Software development is not on the same level as a dozen tabs.

For example, if your software has to do any kind of stochastic work, it’s going to keep your CPU deeply occupied. That goes double if it needs to secure the stochastic data, and triple if it has to encode/encrypt and decode/decrypt information.

So while the dozen tabs and Photoshop might be manageable by your lower end CPU, you might run into a wall if you are trying to use those dozen tabs and Photoshop while also simulating server workloads for your newly written network management algorithms. Even worse if your program is developed to be multi-threaded.

Good point. But it’s hard to find a decent laptop out there that isn’t a steaming pile of shit.

Almost every machine on the market has at least one glaring flaw.

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Every time I’ve had to try and min-max the value of a purchase on paper, it has back-fired. Especially with computers. The GeForce 6600 GT, single-core Athlon 64 3200+, Dell Inspiron E1405, some non-descript Acer desktop back in the ‘90s (yes, I was doing computers at 6).

So with that, I would totally splurge on one of those Razer Blade laptops, the new HP Omen, or Apple MacBook Pro (hiss!). It might cost a lot now, but it more likely will earn the extra back in saved time and stress.

Alternatively, Surface Pro 3. I have several friends who have them and are totally enamored, and I can see why. It comes in an i7 flavor.

Kinja'd!!! Nibby > Axial
04/28/2015 at 19:59

Kinja'd!!!1

Agreed... I don’t even bother looking at most midrange and lower machines. For desktops, I build my own.

For laptops, I almost ALWAYS stick to business-class or workstation products. They’re superior. More features, better hardware, better warranties and reliability, easier maintenance, better quality.

Fun fact, the ULV i7s are marginally faster than the i5 ones. They’re a waste of money and are dual core only. If you want i7, quad core is the way to go.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Nibby
04/28/2015 at 20:23

Kinja'd!!!1

Talking about the ULV in the Surface Pro 3? Yeah, the i5 has a higher base clock frequency, too. I wouldn’t recommend the Surface Pro 3 for serious development. The other three have full quad cores. Honestly, though, I wouldn’t use any laptop for serious development. I built an X79-based desktop specifically for that (and games), because no laptop could run stochastic simulations fast enough for my liking and I’m not learned enough to program multiple threads, yet.

Definitely agree on the workstation class products. The EliteBook from a few years ago was amazing, quite the tank. I’m not as thrilled with the newest ones, though, especially with the trend in flat key-caps. Those are literally the devil. They caused all the sin in the world. The Precision, which is an ancient design they are just cramming with newer components, is more appealing. Also discounts through familial associations.

I have a Precision M4600 and an HP ZBook 14... both are really nice machines in their respective rights.

The ZBook is ULV, unfortunately, but the rest of it is killer. It has the BEST display on a laptop I’ve seen... 14” FHD IPS.
